Making the bed

Another couple of beds of native grasses planted up in the Forktree rare seed orchard, with a view to seed being harvested for propagation and planting both here at Forktree and elsewhere.

Over the last two centuries 99% of native grasslands have been lost in South Australia, yet native grasses play such an important role on multiple fronts: they are more drought resistant and fire retardant than introduced grass species and are vital cornerstones for habitat restoration and healthy native ecosystems.

Many thanks to Caleb and Steve from Seeding Natives for their guidance and expertise and to volunteers alph, Pete and Taher for their hard work and good cheer. A great job done! Now we watch and wait, excited to collect our first harvest of seed so that we can grow more saplings for the Forkree site and elsewhere.
