Green facilities
It has been a busy time recently at Forktree, with all manner of infrastructure development. You know all about the seed nursery; now time to update you on the something less glamorous but no less important - our new composting toilet.
Everything at Forktree is a learning experience and a team effort, and the construction of our new facilities has been no different, with multiple phases, each challenging in its own right:
-
Dig a MASSIVE hole and a trench for a drainage pipe (thank you, Simon).
-
Strengthen the sides of the hole and the trench, and fill in the trench (thank you, Tim).
-
Build a rock-solid floor above the hole using as much salvaged timber as possible (thank you, Tim and Jake).
-
Design and build the “dunny” itself and fit it in postion (thank you, Ralph).
-
use old lengths of corrugated iron salvaged from site to create walls and a roof (thank you Tim, Jake AND Ralph).
-
Ok, the door still needs to go on but that will be a breeze after everything else.
Once again, how satisfying to have built this out of 95% recycled and salvaged materials. Volunteers, you now have facilities to use when you visit!
And finally, a huge thanks once again to Tatachilla Lutheran College whose generous donation helped us bring this project to fruition.
